Q1. I am so proud to have you on #InspireMe. You were a junior to me in school and somehow seeing you evolve from there has been aspiring. I’d like to start by giving you the privilege of showing gratitude towards people who have made ‘Shudhdesi by Renaissance’ a success!

Renaissance – Hi, my name is Renaissance Datta and I am a Jewellery and Clothing Entrepreneur. In March 2016 I started my online shop at the age of 20. I was in my 2nd year of BTech back then when I first opened my page in Instagram. Every success of any business is attributed to its clients. But, firstly I would like to thank my mother who was there from the very first day. My tribe is simply made of the people who have responded beautifully to my work. Shudhdesi by Renaissance would not be possible without my tribe. I would also like to thank you Sonali di for giving me this beautiful opportunity .

Success of any Business is attributed to its Clients.

Q2. What made you start ‘Shudhdesi by Renaissance’ ?

Renaissance – Shudhdesi by Renaissance happened out of immense passion and my creative nature since childhood. I was in 2nd year of my BTech when I started my career as a jewellery designer without any formal degree as a designer. I was never into engineering as my mind and soul was always into creative field and I have always wanted to follow my passion. So without any further ado, I finally made my jewellery page on Instagram and Facebook .

My soul was always into creative field so I followed my Passion.

Q3. Do you design all the jewellery by yourself or are you a Dealer or Seller?

How is the work conducted?

Renaissance – I design all the jewelleries myself with a good amount of help from my mother. I am really grateful and lucky because my mother has been helping me with the designs and curating jewelleries from the very start. Work seems to be fun when both mother daughter supports each other to create something extraordinary.

It’s basically an online shop. So, first I draw my ideas on a paper and then arrange the materials needed and create the desirable piece. After the designing part is done I click pictures of every piece and then upload and sell on both my Instagram and Facebook profiles.

Q4. I see that ‘Shudhdesi by Renaissance’ is also into Indian attire for women and you have some very innovative designs. Tell us more.

Renaissance – Traditional clothes represent our Indian culture and identity and we should keep hold onto it to preserve our tradition. I have been watching my mother having a unique fashion sense and style and so I always desired to look like her since childhood. She is my first inspiration as an artist and so I have been always thinking out of the box regarding clothes and jewelleries.

So, after a year of designing jewellery I also started working with Indian sarees and handpainted ethnic blouses. I am a die hard saree lover and so I want to create a difference in Indian attire. I am working my best to bring out exclusive designs and styles for the beautiful ladies out there.

Q5. We love the name. Is there any story behind it ?

Renaissance – Thank you so much for liking the brand name. At such no particular story behind the name but I hope I can justify the reason behind it. Shudh means purity whereas desi is defining anything Indian on the basis to western culture. Since I am an Indian by birth and nationality I wanted to give the brand name an Indian touch to it.

The brand name ends with “by Renaissance“ as Renaissance is my real name and it has a beautiful meaning and most probably the best term I can use because I want to create rebirth in Indian fashion with my designs and thoughts.

Q6. The most beautiful aspect about your brand is that all the ladies in the house took care of being the models. How did you come up with that idea ?

Renaissance – I have made my mother the model of my brand. She is doing all the jewellery, saree and blouse shoots gracefully irrespective of her age. I want to set an example that it is not necessary a model must be young, have proper body structure, glowing skin or have fair skin tone. There are many women out there who have the talent but not the courage or a way out to do something for themselves.

In India, there are millions of homemakers who are totally dependent on their family or husband for monetary support. Should we not use this platform to encourage women to be a part of the developing country ?

I want to set an example that it is not necessary a model must be young, have proper body structure, glowing skin or have fair skin tone.

Q7. Have people started noticing your work? What’s the response been like?

Renaissance – Well, on the positive front, I have started around with just 10 to 15 people. But now I have around 600 – 700 people in my tribe in just 2 years which makes me proud that that I’m able to gain the trust and recognition of so many people, my clients who have become less of my customer and more of a family. They look forward for my work. My inbox gets flooded with messages of people asking me what’s going on, what’s next, they are curious and inquisitive as to what I’m going to bring on the table next.

There are people who i have helped in setting up a buisness from the scratch just like me. The fact that I will end up insiring so may people as well was totally uncalled for. This amount of love, appreciation, encouragement I get and have been getting makes me proudly say that yeah the response has been great!

On the negative front, I come across various pages on insta and fb, pages which shamelessly copy my work and post as their own, asking my very own clients to buy. It deeply saddens me then. But just as I have said it’s my clients encouragement, love and support which makes me forget everything and start fresh every morning.

My clients have become less of my Customer and more of a Family.

Q8. Your Industry of antique styled jewellery has seen a boom in the past few years. How do you tackle competition and what do you feel separates you from the rest?

Renaissance – India has a rich tribal culture ,which despite modernisation has kept its unique tradition intact. I am experimenting with good antique jewellery as antique jewellery can be seen anywhere and everywhere from red carpet to fashion streets. Competition exists in every field and it can actually be good for any business. I believe competition leads to innovation and better itself so I enjoy it.

India is a diverse country regarding various crafts and handmade work. There are numerous jewellery and clothing pages and popular online websites. And among those pages you will find Shudhdesi by Renaissance who is just 2 year old almost like a new born baby. I believe that besides curating, presentation is a very vital point in any work. I put a lot of effort in presenting my jewelleries and clothes through proper photographs keeping original colour and product intact. I always describe the type, materials ,proper colour whenever I upload pictures.

I also make my mother the model of my products providing women with clear picture and giving idea who are mostly apprehensive regarding their age to buy the particular product. I don’t think many designers try working with model who are mostly among their 40’s or 50’s. I think perfection and quality should be of the products being worn and pictures being clicked. I will maintain my ideology in future too .

Q9. Tell us about a failure(s) and how you overcame it.

Renaissance – I was in my 2nd year of college pursuing my btech in civil engineering when I started my business online. The first major struggle I went through was not financially but mentally because almost everyone starting from relatives to family friends ,college friends has bullied my work. I am still hearing from a lot of people that I should shut down my business and apply for jobs as a civil engineer.

Another major difficulty I have fought is my stammering problem that I have since childhood. Countless nights I have cried myself to sleep thinking that if I couldn’t talk to people I couldn’t reach out to them. But, I gathered strength mentally telling myself everyday that I May
have a problem in my speech but not in my mind and it should never stop me for evolving. I gave
inner strength to myself and overcame my fear.

Q10. Last but not the least, How did 2017 treat you and what re your Goals for 2k18 ?

Renaissance – In the year 2017 I have experienced both good and bad. I wouldn’t say bad but it’s always a lesson. The best part was that I have got much recognition and people have followed and
encouraged me and my work. Many elderly women and also many of my age has been inspired by
my work and have started their own business. I will say the greatest achievement is that I have
been successful on inspiring so many women through my work.

Since the country is changing rapidly, and people are mostly attracted to western clothes. So, in
This modernised country I am trying my best to bring out the original work and products to people
who are unaware of authentic quality that has been made in various states by our Indian craftsmen. 50 years from now if all the crafts die due to lack of demand, the next generation will have nothing
to fall back upon. Shudhdesi by Renaissance supports Indian handicraft and I am trying my best to
work with Indian products which are eco friendly and sustainable.

I have got much recognition and people have followed and encouraged me and my work.

Thank you Sonali Di for this beautiful opportunity.
